A former prison for radical thinkers rebuilt into a Design Hotel: HOTEL LIBERTY. Plans and designs were developed, then redeveloped and started over from scratch - until the right design formula was found. From now on this colossal building with its massive windows and doors is open for you.

At the HOTEL LIBERTY, 38 comfortable hotel rooms and suites were created by combining multiple prison cells. The sleek, solid architecture is still ever-present even today, but now it blends beautifully with the expectations of our discerning guests. Beautiful parquet flooring and multiple arches made from historic bricks, ledges concealed in the wall that flood the old structures with warm light, stunning bathrooms. Location

NATURE, SPORT AND CULTURE AROUND THE LIBERTY Just a five-minute walk from the Liberty is the center of Offenburg with its rustic taverns, little boutiques and old half-timbered houses. Sports enthusiasts and nature lovers, fans of culture or those in need of a wellness break will also find their needs met. Buzzwords here include the Ortenau and neighboring Alsace regions, the Black Forest and Vogosen, wine festivals and traditional “Vesperstuben” snack bars, shopping and markets, galleries and museums, castles and châteaux, hiking, mountain biking or playing golf. Runners can also set off on routes straight from the hotel.

Design

EMPATHY MEETS CREATIVITY: Two free-standing cell buildings, connected by a glass box spanning the former prison courtyard. The lounge, restaurant, open grill and bar combine to form a large development, with high sandstone walls and a new glass facade creating a worthy link to history: cosiness coupled with uniqueness.

BUILDING HISTORY

The building work began in 1840 and subsequently this was a place where freedom was lost, somewhere free-thinking people were imprisoned precisely because of their free spirit. The first prisoners in this former penal institution were the visionaries and pioneers of freedom and democracy in Germany: the Baden revolutionaries.
